BYOD Meeting Tuesday 26th of November

To parents,
We are holding a parent evening on 26th November in the school hall at 7p.m., aimed at the parents of Years 5 and 6 about BYOD in Senior School next year.
It’s your choice – your child could bring a device from home and/or continue to use the school devices. There are lots of questions about what this means to students, families, and learning at Sunnyhills School. At this parent evening we aim to address all questions and we will cover:
 Rationale behind ‘bring your own device’.
 How does it link to learning?
 What 21st Century Learning looks like?
 Bring your own device myths.
 Questions and Answer time
We have set up an online “post-it note” wall where you can ask any questions you may have, prior to the meeting. All questions are welcome. Use the link below to add a question.

Maths problem....can you figure it out?! (1,000 house points if you do!)

In front of a classroom there is a concrete square pad with a concrete walkway leading to it.
The total area of the pad is 151m squared
The width of the concrete  walkway is 4meters less than the length of the concrete square pad.
The concrete walkway is 5meters longer that the length of the concrete square pad.
What is the length of the concrete square pad?

Describe the setting

We are learning how to describe the setting of different places. We had to describe a place using our five senses but could not say where we actually were! Can you guess where these people are? Room one
I could hear the annoying seagulls squawking randomly. I could see the water shimmering like sparkling diamonds. I could smell fantastic cooked sea crabs. I could feel the salty sea water spraying frantically on me. I could taste the delicious deep fried crabs.
Where am I?
By Gordon Mei
I could smell the fresh bushy grass as I ambled across it. I could hear the adorable foals neighing playing at each other. I could see the ponies’ coats dazzling in the sunshine. I could feel the ponies’ warm breath on my neck as they came to me. I could taste the carrot from the ponies’ mouth.
Where am I?
By Georgia Milner
I saw the ball speeding pass me I sniffed the crisp air flow into my nose. The crowd was calling my name. I took down a man right next to the try line I could taste the sparkling rain crash in to my mouth from the sky.

Escape From Afghanistan Letter By Caitlyn

Escape From Afghanistan Letter The mini BFGs had to read ‘Escape from Afghanistan’ and then write a diary entry as though they were refugees on a boat heading towards Australia. We had to consider the things that we read and then apply our understandings. Dear Margaret, We are on the boat right now (leaving from Indonesia) and it absolutely stinks! My back feels like breaking because I’m stuck between two fat people. Sorry I haven’t written lately, I’ve been sick because a man kept coughing on my food. I can’t wait ‘till we get to Christmas Island, so I can see you! If only I was on a faster boat so I could see you quicker! We don’t have lifejackets, so I’m so scared that we are going to sink. Every time I wake up SITTING UP I always think we are gradually sinking, sinking, until my feet touch the water! Well, it’s not long to go, only three more weeks. You’re probably thinking “Yeah, right, that’s super long!” but it’s worth it when you are escaping from Afghanistan! See you soon! Caitlyn

Escape From Afghanistan Diary entry by Emma Brown

Escape From Afghanistan Diary entry We read a story called ‘Escape from Afghanistan’. It was about a family that escaped from Afghanistan during the war. I got the inspiration from this story. It is based on a character I invented. Tues, 4 June Dear Diary, The bus is so crowded and small I can barely move! We are going to Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan. From there we will take another bus to Peshawar, in Pakistan; a plane to Kuala Lumpur, in Malaysia; and then another plane to Indonesia. What a journey! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wed, 5 June Dear Diary, I am on board a boat heading to Christmas Island. The boat trip is meant to take 36 hours. The boat is crowded. We are all sea-sick and the toilet is just a hole in a piece of wood and everyone can see you using it because there are no walls! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thurs, 6 June Dear Diary, I’m sure we are travelling in circles. (I just know something is wrong.) I haven’t been able to sleep because the boat is so crowded. We have to sit up and the water keeps splashing my back. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fri, 7 June Dear Diary, I have just discovered that the captain can’t find Christmas Island. He calls himself a captain!? I could just scream!!! Young children are crying and men are swearing and arguing. Will this nightmare ever end? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sat, 8 June Dear Diary, The engine just stopped. I think the petrol has run out. Wait, it has just started again. Wow! Oh no, it’s just stopped again. Here comes a ship. The captain is signalling using a mirror. We are all waiting as it comes near…

Equal Addition Strategy

Math Magicians have been looking at different strategies to help them solve subtraction problems (up to 4 digits). Here is Caitlyn and Rachel showing us the equal addition strategy. What we need to remember for this strategy is:
1. It only works for subtractions
2. We need to add the SAME number to each one
3. We do not need to do any compensating at the end because if you have added the same number to each one you will still get the same answer
Have a look! And comment if you learnt something new or if you have any questions about the strategy as the Math Magicians would love to answer them.

Why did seven keep coming up when we rolled two dices and added them?! WE FOUND OUT WHY!

Friday 15th of March Room 1 looked at probabilities again. This time we tried to find out why the seven kept on popping up. We looked at all the possible answers we could get and then looked at the chances of getting each answer from 1 to 12. Seven had the highest chance of coming up as it showed a ratio of 6:36 and THEN we figured out this is because on a dice every number be can used to make 7! Here is some of our work.
P.S TRY THIS AT HOME - rolling two dices and adding them together 7 will be the most popular!

Probability in room 1

Room 1 was looking at probability  for maths. We had work in our table groups, one person had to roll two dices and then we all had to add the two numbers together and record it in a tally chart. The most popular number was 7 some people know why, but some people are about to find out!

I CAN'T WRITE A POEM!

Today in writing we looked at list poems. We wrote a poem about how we can't write a poem. We made up ten excuses! Each poem has to start with:
 Forget it
You must be kidding
And end with:
You like it? Really?
No kidding
Thanks a lot!
Would you like to see another one?

Have a read!

I Can’t Write A Poem!

Forget it
You must be kidding
My Dad ate my books
Someone murdered my pencil
My rubber went to the Olympics
I forgot my glasses
I don’t have my pen license
My desk is stuck
I didn’t understand anything
There’s a dead rat on my chair
My pen just broke
My hairs in the way
You like it? Really?
No kidding
Thanks a lot!
Would you like to see another one?
By Caitlyn

I can’t write a poem
 Forget it.
You must be kidding
I’m only half a wake
The class is on fire
I have no brain
I’m bored and have no interest
I’m hungry so I ate my paper
I feel sick
The camel keeps on licking me
Lightening struck my paper
I have no pencil
All I have is a dumb list of excuses
You like it? Really? No kidding
Thanks a lot
Would you like to see another one

I Can’t write a poem!
Forget it
You must be kidding
My brain’s upside down
My eyes are only half opened
I lost my pencil
I can’t write with pen
My desk is empty
The bird took my book
Besides, I don’t even know how to write a poem.
I also ran out of pad paper
My sister flushed my written language book down the toliet
Uh oh! Times out
You like it? Really? No kidding?
Thanks a lot. Would you like to see another one?

I Can’t Write A Poem
Forget it.
You must be kidding.
My arms are sore.
I lost my pencil.
I have no rubber.
I broke both arms.
A dinosaur ate my written language book.
I went to bed late.
My paper is ripped.
A bird took my book.
I lost my brain.
My pencil snapped.
All I have is this dumb list of excuses.
You like it? Really?
Thanks a lot.
Would you like to see another one.
